Once we determined the value of each subscriber, we needed to focus on whether we could acquire a subscriber for less than that subscriber was and food blogs worth to us. At this point, it was simply a matter of testing different channels to acquire new subscribers for our emails.

And exchanged referral emails. We tested email data coupons that our customers and website visitors could share with their friends. And we started investing small amounts of money in paid acquisition to attract customers, leads, and email referrals.

Most of these tests didn’t work. Some generated almost no email subscribers. Others generated email subscribers, but at such a high price that we knew we couldn’t optimize that price to a level that would be profitable.

But we remained hopeful and saw positive signs. Some channels were close to our break-even point, and so we thought we could leverage these efforts to help us become profitable—or were immediately profitable.

This allowed us to not only establish our

North Star for our email e-commerce efforts, but also our North Star for our business as a whole. We focused on this metric, found channels that what causes a high bounce rate and how to fix it would work, and began rapidly growing our email list.

Over time, the company began to and food blogs grow and become profitable. Eventually, it was acquired by a competitor, given the consolidation and the fact that we were working on several other businesses. But the lesson was learned.
